After the first outing of Suicide Squad fell short of everybody’s expectations – while it raked in the money it only garnered 25% on Rotten Tomatos, ouch – Warner Bros seem keen not to rush the production of the next movie.
Due to start production late next year, it has been announced that The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor has been brought on board to write and direct the picture. His previous project with Warner Bros also saw him team up with the Batman himself, Ben Affleck, who is also expected to make a return to Suicide Squad 2.
The search to find a director for the second outing has been long, with David Ayer confirming he wouldn’t be returning the studio approached Mel Gibson and Juan Collet-Serra, who turned it down to direct Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Jungle Cruise. Other names that have cropped up in relation to the movie are Warm Bodies‘ Jonathan Levine, Life‘s Daniel Espinosa and Ruben Fleischer, who is now connected to Sony’s Venom movie.
It’s getting particularly hard to keep up with the DCEU film listings, with their seemingly a new announcement every other day – what with the recent announcement of the Harley Quinn/Joker romance story with Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, and a Joker movie sans their current actor, Harley’s Gotham City Sirens (which currently has Robbie and Leto attached with David Ayer down for directorial duties) – but despite the less-than-favourable reaction to Suicide Squad Warner Bros seem keen to full-steam ahead into a sequel.
With Justice League due out in November, time will tell if Warner Bros can finally hit the same marker as Marvel’s Avengers with their newest big team up. The early signs seem good, but with reshoots still happening, it could be a rush to the finish.
Suicide Squad 2 currently doesn’t have a firm release date. Justice League hits cinemas on the 17 November. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
