Venom film adds Jenny Slate as a scientist

In what could well be the best casting move of the month so far, Jenny Slate has just been hired for Sony’s Venom, according to Variety. Better yet, she’ll be playing a scientist of some description.

For those unfamiliar with Slate (though you should get familiar because she’s excellent), she’s best known for her comedic roles and voice work in the likes of TV’s Parks And RecreationBob’s Burgers and Kroll Show, as well as The Lego Batman MovieZootropolis and Despicable Me 3. However, she’s also recently dabbled in drama, like this year’s Marc Webb-directed Gifted and 2014’s multi-award winning Obvious Child.

Venom barely has the wheels turning yet, but it’s already shaping up to sound pretty damn appealing. Along with Slate, Tom Hardy is taking on the lead role of Eddie Brock, also known as Venom himself, and Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea) and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) are also onboard in supporting roles.

Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less director Ruben Fleischer is helming the project, while Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower) and Scott Rosenberg  (Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle) are collaborating on the script.

With the alien symbiote character of Venom being as popular as he is, Sony is making the film a top priority, so we can expect the film to hit cinemas in a year’s time.

Venom is in UK cinemas on 5 October 2018. Get all the latest comic book movie news with every issue of SciFiNow.
