In a case of life imitating art, Universal Pictures’ Bride Of Frankenstein is having to make some readjustments. According to Deadline, pre-production on what would have been the second film in the Universal monsters Dark Universe has been paused until further notice.
Bride Of Frankenstein was set for a 14 February 2019 release date, but issues with the script have prompted some rewrites. The film seems to have dropped off the Dark Universe timeline completely for the time being until the issues get ironed.
The cast hasn’t been finalised yet, but Javier Bardem and Angelina Jolie have been in talks to play Frankenstein’s Monster and his bride respectively. It’s believed that they are both still very much interested, even with the delays.
In a statement, Universal said: “After thoughtful consideration, Universal Pictures and director Bill Condon have decided to postpone Bride of Frankenstein.
“None of us want to move too quickly to meet a release date when we know this special movie needs more time to come together. Bill is a director whose enormous talent has been proven time and again, and we all look forward to continuing to work on this film together.”
Universe had big plans for its Dark Universe, but things don’t seem to be going well. It’s first attempt, Dracula Untold, was so lacklustre that the studio decided to just forget about it and not include it in the universe at all. This year’s The Mummy, which was the second attempt and the first official film of the series, was a bit of a hot mess and received less than favourable reviews from critics and cinema-goers alike.
