After being in development for years, the film based on Josh Malerman’s incredible novel Bird Box is finally moving full steam ahead, and it’s got a hell of a cast.
Variety reports that the previously announced Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich will be joined by Danielle Macdonald (the star of the brilliant Patti Cake$), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight, The Predator), Jacki Weaver (The Voices, Stoker), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, Carol), Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel) and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out).
The film will be directed by the excellent Susanne Bier (The Night Manager, Open Hearts) and it’s been adapted by Arrival‘s Eric Heisserer. There’s no word on who any of the actors will be playing apart from Bullock.
Malerman’s story “is set in the near future, where a mother (Bullock) and her two young children are among a small group of survivors after a mysterious alien force has driven the world’s population to deadly violence. The three must make their way on a terrifying journey — 20 miles in a rowboat — while blindfolded, with nothing to rely on but the mother’s wits and the children’s trained ears.”
The film has been set up at Netflix after spending some time at Universal, where IT and Mama director Andy Muschietti was previously attached to direct.
The novel is excellent and this is a seriously impressive talent roster. We can’t wait.
