Umbrella Academy TV series casts Ellen Page

Netflix’s TV series based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic Umbrella Academy has found its first star: the excellent Ellen Page.

Variety reports that the star of Juno, Hard Candy, Whip It and Inception will star as Vanya in the show, with the pilot written by The Exorcist’s Jeremy Slater. Steve Blackman, who’s worked on such ace shows as Fargo, Legion and Netflix’s upcoming Altered Carbon, will be acting as showrunner.

The series “follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) – Luther, Diego, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five – as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities. Page will play Vanya, the black sheep of her family. She’s the only one of Reginald Hargreeves’ adopted children with no supernatural abilities. A meek and insecure wallflower, Vanya struggles to find her place in the world.”

We’re big fans of Page, and the idea of her starring on a comic book TV series is pretty damn exciting. The last time she was a regular on a TV show was back in 2004 on Canadian SF series ReGenesis. Which is apropos of nothing, really, we just wanted to remind people about ReGenesis.
