We at SciFiNow would like to congratulate sci-fi author Claire North for making the shortlist for The Sunday Times/Peters Fraser + Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award 2017 with her excellent novel The End Of The Day.
The other shortlisted young authors include Minoo Dishaw (Outlandish Knight: The Byzantine Life Of Steven Runciman), Julianne Pachico (The Lucky Ones), Sally Rooney (Conversations With Friends) and Sara Taylor (The Lauras).
As a result of the submissions being so strong, this year for the first time the shortlist includes five titles, rather than four – three novels, a collection of short stories and a biography – and four of the authors are women.
Claire told SciFiNow: “It was a huge surprise and delight to be shortlisted for this award, especially for The End of the Day, a book which doesn’t really obey the rules. As young writers go, I’m an old biddy, but next to the ridiculous talent of the other books on the shortlist I’m proud to be flying a flag for science fiction, the apocalypse, and geeks and hacks everywhere.”
The winner of the Sunday Times Young Writer Of The Year Award will be announced on 7 December. www.youngwriteraward.com
To celebrate being shortlisted, Claire has teamed up with SciFiNow to give away a copy of The End Of The Day to five lucky readers. To be in with a chance of winner, simply answer the question below:
Claire North will be speaking at a panel event with the other shortlisted authors at Waterstones Trafalgar Square on 28th November (6.30-8.30pm). Tickets can be bought here.
