Captain Marvel casts Jude Law as Dr Lawson opposite Brie Larson

Jude Law has really been getting in on his franchises recently. First he was confirmed to be playing the young Albus Dumbledore in the next Wizarding World instalment, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Now he has been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically Captain Marvel.

The actor joins Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who finds herself with superpowers after a freak accident that causes her DNA to fuse with that of an alien.

Law is set to be the film’s male lead, and Variety reports that he will be playing Doctor Walter Lawson, also known as Mar-Vell. The character becomes something of a mentor to Danvers while she attempts to get a grip on her new powers.

In the comics, Dr Lawson was the alter ego of the original male Captain Marvel, and debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 in December 1967. He was part of an alien race called the Kree, had no superhuman powers beside being stronger and more durable than most humans sue to his advanced Kree physiology.

Captain Marvel will be set in the nineties, and will also star Ben Mendelsohn as an as yet unspecified villain and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury before he famously lost an eye.

The film is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a screenplay by Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Kevin Feige is of course producing, and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Jonathan Schwartz are all serving as executive producers.

Captain Marvel is in cinemas on 8 March 2019. Get all the latest superhero movie news with every issue of SciFiNow.
