Every now and again, Quentin Tarantino’s name gets floated around a big genre property. There was that weird period when he was apparently going to make a Friday The 13th movie, a rumour that turned out to be nonsense, but this latest one sounds reasonably legit.
Deadline reports that the filmmaker has pitched an idea for a Star Trek movie to JJ Abrams, who is currently working on Star Wars: Episode IX, and they claim that it was exciting enough for Paramount to put a team together.
Per the site, “After sharing his idea with JJ Abrams…I’ve heard the plan is to assemble a writers room of scribes who’ll hear Tarantino’s take and begin to put together a movie. If it all works out, Tarantino might direct it, with Abrams producing.”
The latter part sounds particularly far-fetched. It’s hard to imagine Quentin Tarantino jumping into a massive studio movie, let alone someone else’s franchise, where his total creative control would surely be curtailed. Surely there’s only so far a studio would bend on a movie like this, even for Quentin Goddamn Tarantino. That being said, he clearly loves Trek, and he’s dipped his toe into other people’s properties before, directing episodes of ER and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation a while back.
Meanwhile, it’s nice to see movement of any kind on a new Star Trek film given the lack of definitive answers on whether a sequel to Star Trek Beyond is happening or not. Chris Hemsworth was mooted to return as Kirk’s father but, as good as Beyond was, it wasn’t the financial success Paramount wanted, and circumstances outside the movie meant that it could function as a nice finale to the trilogy if it needed to. Of course, there are no details at all about what this new pitch was.
Meanwhile, Tarantino is busy prepping his Charles Manson film that’s not exactly a Charles Manson film, which is set for release in 2019.
