It seems as if Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie is moving ahead, and very quickly at that. Having wondered how much creative control he’d really have on a big franchise like this, Paramount has responded with “quite a lot, actually.”
Deadline reports that the studio has approved Tarantino going for an R-rating, as has producer JJ Abrams. While this is certainly a big departure for the movies, the F-bomb has been dropped on Star Trek: Discovery, which provoked the ire of some fans. We have to wonder just how R he’d want to take the movie if he’s a big fan; it may be more symbolic, showing a commitment to creative freedom, rather than a pledge to deliver a blood-slicked Enterprise where beloved characters use racially charged language and talk about what ‘Sabotage’ is really about.
The site also reports that the writers’ room that was rumoured to have been set up has helped to narrow down the search for the person who’ll shoulder the burden of writing the script, as well as plotting out the film. The room included Mark L Smith (The Revenant), Lindsey Beer (Godzilla Vs Kong, Chaos Walking), Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and Megan Amram (The Good Place, Parks And Recreation).
From that room, Smith has apparently emerged as the frontrunner, but whoever gets the job will be “locked in quickly” so they can get to work on the script while Tarantino is directing his Manson murders movie. The plan is still for Tarantino to direct…We’re still having a hard time believing this will actually all come to pass, but we’ll see!
