Henry James’ The Turn Of The Screw is one of the greatest ghost stories (or is it?) of all time, and was most famously adapted for the big screen in 1961 with Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. Now, the tale is getting another twist, as Variety reports a new film called The Turning is on the way.
The Amblin film will star the awesome Mackenzie Davis (Halt & Catch Fire, the Black Mirror episode ‘San Junipero’, Blade Runner 2049) and Finn Wolfhard, who seems to be continuing his dominance of the horror genre following Stranger Things and IT.
The excellent Floria Sigismundi will be making her return to the big screen for the first time since 2010’s The Runaways, although she’s kept busy directing episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, American Gods and Daredevil in the interim (she also directed the brilliant video for David Bowie’s ‘The Stars Are Out Tonight’).
In the story, “a young woman hired as the nanny to two orphans is convinced that the country mansion they live in is haunted.” Davis will play the nanny, while Wolfhard will play one of the orphans. The Conjuring duo Chad and Carey Hayes wrote the first draft, and Black List-featured screenwriter Jade Bartlett is currently working on the script.
Originally the project was set up as Haunted under director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), who had cast Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones) and Alfre Woodard, but THR reported that Dreamworks pulled the plug last year after a drastic rewrite by the director and Scott Z Burns proved to be not to their liking, despite $5 million having already been spent.
