Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated Star Trek film hires Mark L Smith to write the script

Though the whole ‘Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming R-rated Star Trek movie’ thing has kind of felt like a collective fever dream, it very much is still happening. The news wheels are quickly turning, with the latest update being that the project has already found a screenwriter.

According to Deadline, Paramount Pictures has tapped Mark L Smith to write the script. Even if you don’t recognise his name, you will almost definitely be familiar with his work: Smith’s writing credits include The HoleVacancyMartyrs and Alejandro G Iñárritu’s 2015 hit Western epic The Revenant

It sounds as though Smith’s work really impressed Paramount, seeing as he beat Lindsey Beer (Godzilla Vs KongChaos Walking), Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and Megan Amram (The Good PlaceParks And Recreation) to the job after the studio set up a writers’ room to help  narrow down the search.

The Star Trek film doesn’t have a title yet, but the plan is that Tarantino will direct, and he and Star Trek alum JJ Abrams will produce.

The film doesn’t yet have a release date. Keep up with the latest genre news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
