Director Spike Lee might be taking on a Nightwatch film for Sony Pictures Entertainment, according to entertainment news site That Hashtag Show.
Apparently, a film based on the Marvel character is currently in its very early stages and Lee could be directing it from a script by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. However, Sony declined to comment.
Lee is best known for directing films like Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X and She’s Gotta Have It, and recently directed and executive produced a TV version of the latter for Netflix.
He’s currently working on Black Klansman, a biographical film about Ron Stallworth, an African-American police officer from Colorado who successfully managed to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan and become the head of a local chapter. Lee wrote the script with David Rabinowitz.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Nightwatch first appeared in the Marvel comics in 1993 (in Web Of Spider-Man #97) as the alter ego of scientist Dr Kevin Trench.
In the beginning, most of the hero’s appearances came alongside Spider-Man, as well as in his own short lived self-titled series. Nightwatch has since teamed up with the likes of Captain America and Deathlok, among others.
Sony executive vice president Palak Patel is currently supervising the development of the Nightwatch film.
