Actress DeWanda Wise has officially left Captain Marvel. It hadn’t been confirmed who she would be playing before she exited, but the role was believed to be more than a bit-part.
Wise’s decision to leave has come down to scheduling conflicts between the film and Season 2 of Spike Lee’s Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, which she stars in. The show was renewed for a second season just as Wise first boarded the Captain Marvel cast back in January.
Captain Marvel is set to revolve around Brie Larson’s superhero Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who finds herself with superpowers after a freak accident that causes her DNA to fuse with that of an alien.
The film will be set in the nineties, and will also star Jude Law as Carol Danvers’ mentor Dr Walter Lawson, Gemma Chan as alien geneticist/spy Captain Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as an as yet unspecified villain, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury before he famously lost one of his eyes.
The film is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a screenplay by Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Kevin Feige is of course producing, and Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Jonathan Schwartz are all serving as executive producers.
Captain Marvel is in cinemas on 8 March 2019. Get all the latest superhero movie news with every issue of SciFiNow.
