Happy Death Day 2 confirms cast and returning characters

Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day was one of the biggest pleasant surprises of 2017. It was a funny, inventive and sharp horror about a college student who finds herself stuck in a Groundhog Day-esque time loop as she’s murdered over and over again and has to find out who’s killing her before her death finally sticks.

It was also a big success at the box office (comfortably cracking $100 million worldwide), so it’s not too much of a surprise to see that Universal has got the ball rolling on a sequel right away, and returning director Christopher Landon has lined up his cast.

The best news is that Jessica Rothe will be back as Tree Gelbman (she was absolutely brilliant in the first film), and Israel Broussard returns as her now-boyfriend Carter.

Suraj Sharma (Life Of Pi, Homeland) and Sarah Yarkin (American Horror Story) have been added to the cast. Sharma will play “Samar Ghosh, a science enthusiast and geek who enjoys coding in his spare time,” and Yarkin is “Dre Morgan, a science geek and tom-boy with a sleepy feline gaze who is Samar’s partner-in-crime.”

There are no plot details as of yet, but the site notes that “the sequel will answer questions to the first installment’s endless time loop while Rothe has mentioned that part 2 will pick up where the first film left off in a Back To The Future-like style.”

Happy Death Day 2 will be released in 2019. Keep up with the latest horror news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
