Hulu clearly wants to get in on the TV horror market: the VOD service has just made a 10-episode straight-to-series order for Light As A Feather from AwesomenessTV, Wattpad and Kelsey Grammer’s production company Grammnet.
The series is based on the Wattpad supernatural thriller Light As A Feather, Stiff As A Board by Zoe Aarsen. The story was a big hit when Aarsen first uploaded it to the self-publishing storytelling platform in May 2013, and currently has more than 2.9 million reads. You can check out the story on Wattpad here.
Lee Fleming Jr created the series and will serve as an executive producer and showrunner alongside Awesomeness TV’s Jordan Levin, Shelley Zimmerman, Joe Davola and Brett Bouttier, Wattpad’s Aron Levitz and Eric Lehrman, and Grammnet’s Kelsey Grammer, Brian Sher, Tom Russo and Stella Bulochnikov. Production is set to start in June.
Light As A Feather revolves around McKenna Brady, a 16-year-old high school student with a dark past who hopes things will start to look up after she manages to get in with the popular crowd, led by the blonde and beautiful Olivia Richmond.
However, following an innocent game of ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ at Olivia’s birthday sleepover during which Violet starts to predict the ways in which each of the attendees will die, McKenna’s life is turned upside-down once again. Rapidly, the girls start dying in the same way Violet said, and McKenna is determined to find out if there are evil forces at play or if there’s simply someone killing them off from within the friendship group.
Light as a Feather is a captivating and unique story, with supernatural twists and thrills that readers all over the world have fallen in love with,” said Head of Wattpad Studios Aron Levitz. “The story is another example of a Wattpad fan favourite that is perfect for adaptation and new life on another platform.”
“When I first joined Wattpad, I set out to create something unique, exploring characters and a world where female empowerment, friendship, and supernatural forces come together,” said Zoe Aarsen.
“Wattpad is a place where people come together and connect over stories, discussing every twist and cliffhanger, so it was the perfect platform for my story. Teen horror is my passion, so I can’t wait to be able to share Light as a Feather with other horror aficionados on Hulu.”
