Greg Berlanti and Caroline Dries are currently developing a Batwoman series for The CW, featuring out lesbian crimefighter Kate Kane in the central role.
The series will be the latest to join Berlanti’s Arrowverse, which is currently made up of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow.
Though it’s in its early stages and isn’t set to air until 2019, Batwoman herself will make her first appearance in the Arrowverse’s annual multi-episode crossover event in December this year.
The Arrowverse is usually pretty good for LGBTQ representation (though not really the T), but Batwoman will be the first to feature an LGBTQ lead character when it hits screens next year. Fun fact, it will also be the first superhero show just generally to do it too.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Batwoman made her comics debut in July 1956 in Detective Comics #233 with her alter ego Kathy Kane, but was reintroduced as Kate Kane in 52 #7 in September 2006 and started operating in Gotham City as the modern Batwoman during Batman’s absence.
She was written as an openly gay woman of Jewish descent in an attempt to diversify the DC Comics and connect with a modern audience.
Bertlani and Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns are set to executive produce the series, while Dries is penning the script, as well as serve as an executive producer.
