Robin Wright’s Antiope is set to return in Wonder Woman 1984

*This article contains spoilers for Wonder Woman (2017)*

There were lots of things comic book fans loved about Wonder Woman. Hans Zimmer’s electrifying theme, Patty Jenkins’ direction, THAT cinematography during the No Man’s Land sequence. Elsewhere, Etta Candy’s spunky spirit won hearts, Steve Trevor’s valour made us swoon and Diana Prince’s unyielding love for humanity inspired us all.

But there’s one character that we all couldn’t get enough – and sadly, didn’t get all that much of – and that’s Robin Wright’s Amazon army general Antiope. Fortunately, it has now been confirmed that she’ll be showing up during a flashback sequence in upcoming sequel Wonder Woman 1984.

As part of a lengthy Net-A-Porter profile, Wright revealed that she was gearing up to start a three-week shoot of the scene with co-star Connie Nielsen – who plays Prince’s mother Queen Hippolyta- in Spain. It seems safe to assume that the sequence will see the sisters interacting on Themyscira, an island where the Amazons can remain hidden from man, but it’s interesting to note that that particular location was actually filmed in Italy for the first film.

Those who have seen Wonder Woman will know why Antiope can only appear in future films in flashbacks. In the first movie, she sacrificed herself to save her life-long combat student Prince when Themyscira was discovered and attacked by German soldiers (who were actually in pursuit of undercover pilot Trevor).

She was later seen again in Justice League, during a flashback sequence that saw the Amazons fighting alongside Green Lanterns, Atlanteans and more to stop big bad Steppenwolf from obtaining units of power called the Mother Boxes and destroying Earth as we know it.

It’s no secret that Wright is keen to continue bringing Antiope to life wherever she can. Back in September 2017, she told E! Red Carpet that she “would absolutely go back and do a sequel. For sure … c’mon. Girl power!”

Directed by Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 will see Chris Pine and Gal Gadot reprise their roles as well as newbies Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig join the franchise.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on 15 November 2019.
