Lilo & Stitch to get a live-action remake from Disney

Amazing but somewhat surprising news: we can now count Lilo & Stitch among the long list of animated Disney films that are getting live-action remakes, according to THR.

Mike Van Waes (The Crooked Man) is already on board to write the script for the new film, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback signed up as producers. Lin and Eirich already have their fingers in another Disney pie, and are currently involved in the live-action remake of Aladdin.

If you somehow have never seen the original Lilo & Stitch, go and fix that at your earliest opportunity. It tells the story of Lilo, a young girl with no friends living in Hawaii with her older sister/legal guardian Nani. When an illegal genetic experiment known as Experiment 626 crash lands on the island, Lilo mistakes him for a dog, adopts him and names him Stitch, and the pair quickly become best friends.

The original Lilo & Stitch was written and directed by How To Train Your Dragon‘s Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.

It was released in 2002 during Disney’s Post-Renaissance era, which spanned from 2000-2009. Many consider this period to be something of a shit one, but Lilo & Stitch is well worth a watch.

Other deeply underrated films released during this era (as far as we’re concerned, anyway) include The Emperor’s New GrooveBrother Bear and Meet The Robinsons.

The Lilo & Stitch remake doesn’t yet have a release date. Get all the latest sci-fi news with every issue of SciFiNow.
