Margot Robbie’s Birds Of Prey film has found its villain in Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Trainspotting), Warner Bros has confirmed.
McGregor will be playing Black Mask, a Batman villain whose alter ego Roman Sionis is a major crime lord in Gotham City. The character was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake, and made his first DC Comics appearance in Batman #386 in August 1985.
Black Mask is affiliated with the likes of the False Face Society, Gotham mafia, the Secret Society of Super Villains and Black Lantern Corps. He is a criminal mastermind with a gifted tactical mind, a master of torture and intimidation techniques, a skilled marksman and hand-to-hand combatant and an expert with firearms, and has the ability to use mind control via his mask.
Cathy Yan is directing the film, while Robbie is producing through her LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Sue Kroll for Kroll & Co. Entertainment and Bryan Unkeless for Clubhouse Pictures. The script has been written by Christina Hodson, who was also recently brought on to write the script for the Batgirl film.
Starring alongside Robbie as Harley Quinn and McGregor as Black Mask are Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Lance/Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli/Huntress. Batgirl/Cassandra Cain is yet to be cast, but the film is reportedly on the lookout for a young Asian actress for the role.
