The upcoming Willy Wonka film will be an origin story
Get ready for another presumably hard-hitting origin story. This time, the subject is Willy Wonka.
In an interview with Collider, producer of upcoming Willy Wonka film David Heyman revealed that the project will be a prequel, as opposed to a sequel.
He said: “We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy — when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?… It’s how does he get there? So we’re playing around with that.”
Paddington director Paul King is reportedly in negotiations to helm the film. It will be inspired by Roald Dahl’s book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, which has been adapted for the screen twice before; once in 1971 with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, and once in 2005 with Johnny Depp. The latter very briefly covered Wonka’s origin, which involved his dentist father, played by Christopher Lee.
