My Best Friend’s Exorcism is getting a film adaptation

Grady Hendrix’s horror novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism is getting a film adaptation, according to THR. Endeavor Content, the entity behind the likes of Killing Eve and Colette, has snapped up the film rights for the novel, beating out several other companies.

The film is coming from Christopher Landon, the writer and director of Happy Death Day and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U, who is set to produce alongside Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein. Landon may also direct but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Awkward and 90210 writer Jenna Lamia has already been tapped to write the script for the film, and Hendrix is set to join her as a creative consultant. My Best Friend’s Exorcism publisher Quirk Books (the publisher behind novels like Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children and Pride And Prejudice And Zombies) is producing. The project will be the publishing house’s first venture into the world of film.

For those unfamiliar with Hendrix’s book, here’s Quirk Books’ official synopsis:

An unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist that blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of ’80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?
