The always brilliant Rory Kinnear has joined the cast of Showtime’s upcoming Penny Dreadful spin-off series City Of Angels, according to THR. However, he’s playing a brand new character.
“It’s no secret that Rory is one of my favourite actors on the planet, and working with him in the original series was inspiring,” said Penny Dreadful creator John Logan. “So much so that I wrote this part for him, and I’m thrilled he’ll be joining us in the City Of Angels.”
In City Of Angels, Kinnear will play Dr Peter Craft, a paediatrician and the leader of the German-American-Bund, an organisation that he hopes will keep the US from the ever growing threat of the war in Europe.
In Penny Dreadful, the actor took on the role of John Clare, also known as the Creation, and the creation of Dr Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway).
Kinnear joins a cast made up of Natalie Dormer (Game Of Thrones), Daniel Zavotto (Don’t Breathe), Nathan Lane (The Birdcage), Jessica Garza (The Purge) and Johnathan Nieves (New Amsterdam).
City Of Angels is set in 1930s Los Angeles, “a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.” The series will be rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the devil, and will explore a mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a historical backdrop. The show is worlds away from its Victorian London-set counterpart, and new characters and storylines will feature.
Logan will produce through his Desert Wolf Productions banner, with Michael Aguilar and Neal Street Productions’ Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris executive producing alongside him. James Bagley will co-executive produce.
