Hilary Swank has been cast in the lead role of Netflix’s new sci-fi drama series Away
Netflix is loving Hilary Swank right now. Following the news that the stream had acquired the rights to Swank-starring sci-fi film I Am Mother, it has now gone and cast the actress her own drama series.
Swank is set to star in Away, “an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival set against humanity’s greatest endeavour – the first human mission to Mars.” The series is loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name, and will be made up of 10 episodes.
The series follows Swank as American astronaut Emma Green, who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind in order to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, year-long mission.
Swank will also serve as an executive producer alongside The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. Away is just one project in Reeve’s multi-year deal with Netflix.
The series was created by Penny Dreadful‘s Andrew Hinderaker, who will also write the first episode. Jessica Goldberg (The Path) is set to serve as showrunner, writer and co-executive producer. Ed Zwick (Nashville) will also executive produce and direct the first episode.
