Fox’s sci-fi drama series The Passage has been cancelled after one season, according to Variety.
The Passage is based on Justin Cronin’s trilogy of novels (the first of which was published by Ballantine Books in 2010) and was adapted for television by Elizabeth Heldens.
After mixed reviews from both critics and audiences and pretty poor viewing figures, which averaged under four million viewers per episode in its Monday night slot, we’re not that surprised that the series won’t be making it to Season 2.
The show follows Amy (Saniyya Sidney), a young girl that was chosen by scientists of Project Noah to be injected with a virus that was supposed to cure all diseases. Instead of being a cure, the virus initially turned humans into blood-thirsty vampire-like creatures known as virals. Hoping that Amy will turn that around, Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is tasked with kidnapping the child and delivering her to Project Noah.
The Passage was originally set to be adapted into a film by Fox (which bought the screen rights for $1.75 million) and had Ridley Scott, John Logan and Matt Reeves all attached at one point or other. In 2017, the producers decided the story would work better as a television series and gave the project a pilot production commitment instead. In the spring of 2018, Fox finally ordered the pilot to series.
The series also starred Jamie McShane, Caroline Chikezie, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Brianne Howey, McKinley Belcher III, Henry Ian Cusick and Vincent Piazza.
