Taika Waitit is directing Thor 4, puts Akira on hold

Taika Waititi has joined Thor 4, but his Akira remake has been put on hold

Taika Waititi is very in right now. According to THR, the director is officially set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm Thor 4 (title pending…).

Waititi first joined the MCU for Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, for which he received great praise, so the studio is keen to have him back on board ASAP to both pen and direct the follow-up.

However, the director’s involvement in Thor 4 comes at a price for another studio: Warner Bros’ live-action remake of hit manga series Akira, which Waititi is in charge of, has been put on hold for the time being while Waititi tackles the God of Thunder.

Akira has been in the works for a while, and was pencilled in to hit cinema screens on 21 May 2020. The release has now been pushed back to an unspecified date.

Waititi had been testing actors as part of a worldwide talent search for the film, but the film’s shooting schedule had already been pushed back following concerns with the script. It’s unclear what Warners will do next, but it currently sounds as though it’s very keen on keeping Waititi involved.
