After a radio series, a collection of novels, a 1981 TV series, a 2005 feature film and a video game, Douglas Adams’ brilliant sci-fi comedy series The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy still isn’t over yet: US streaming service Hulu is officially developing a brand new TV series based on the property.
According to Deadline, the series is coming from showrunner Carlton Cuse, whose credits include Lost, Locke & Key and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and screenwriter Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Pan).
The project hails from ABC Signature, the cable and streaming division of ABC Studios, which currently has an overall deal with Cuse and his Genre Arts production company.
Cuse and Fuchs, who are both reportedly big fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide, will serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners for the series, which will be a modern and updated version of the story. Disney currently owns the Hitchhiker’s Guide IP — the studio produced the 2005 feature film starring Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, John Malkovich, Stephen Fry and the voice of Alan Rickman.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy follows the adventures of intergalactic hitchhiker/clueless Englishman Arthur Dent as travels the length and breadth of the universe when his home (the Earth) is destroyed by an alien race known as Vogons in order to make way for a hyperspace bypass.
Writer and humorist Douglas Adams died in 2001. Famously picky, we’re unsure whether Adams would have approved of the series, but we’re still curious to see what it will look like.
