The Handmaid’s Tale TV series is getting a spin-off based on The Testaments


Margaret Atwood’s upcoming The Handmaid’s Tale follow-up novel The Testaments hasn’t hit shelves yet, but there’s already a TV adaptation of it in the works, according to Deadline.

MGM Television and Hulu are developing the project, and are in talks with The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller about how best to incorporate the story into an extension of the show.

MGM’s President of Television Production Steve Stark said: “Margaret Atwood is a literary icon who continues to delight and challenge readers through her provocative and compelling prose. She has been an incredible creative partner and resource to MGM throughout the production of Handmaid’s and we look forward to working with her on the story’s exciting next chapter.”

The Testaments the novel will be published on 10 September, 34 years after the release of The Handmaid’s Tale. Here’s the synopsis:

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her — freedom, prison or death. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.

Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale concluded last week. The series was created by Bruce Miller and stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, OT Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel and Bradley Whitford.
