The Matrix 4 adds Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in lead role


The Get Down’s Yahya Abdul Mateen II has joined The Matrix 4 in a lead role


Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has become the first new player to join the cast of The Matrix 4, according to Variety.

Details about Abdul-Mateen’s character have not been released, but the actor is set to take on a lead role. He joins a cast currently made of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their Matrix trilogy roles as Neo and Trinity respectively.

Abdul-Mateen is known for playing Cadillac in Netflix’s The Ged Down. He has also recently appeared in AquamanThe Greatest Showman and Us, as well as episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale and Black Mirror. He will star as Cal Abraham in HBO’s upcoming Watchmen series.

The Matrix 4 is being directed by franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski, from a script written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The film will be the first in the series that Wachowski hasn’t worked on with her sister Lily.

Lana Wachowski is also producing with her long-time collaborator Grant Hill, and filming is expected to begin at the start of 2020.
