Ahead of its first season (or even an air date or a full cast), the upcoming Lord Of The Rings series has been renewed for Season 2 by Amazon, reports Deadline. The studio clearly has grand ambitions.
The series, which will of course be based on the world created by JRR Tolkien, doesn’t have a full cast in place yet, but it’s set to star Jospeh Mawle (Game Of Thrones), Will Poulter (Midsommar), Maxim Baldry (Years And Years) and Markella Kavenagh (The Cry).
Amazon Studios acquired the global TV rights to The Lord Of The Rings back in 2017, and the upcoming series is just the first related project the studio has been working on.
Deadline has reported that the early renewal means that the LOTR series will go on a 4-5-month break after filming the first two episode of Season 1 (which will be directed by JA Bayona).
In that time, the writing team (led by showrunners and EPs JD Payne and Patrick McKay) will map out and write the bulk of the Season 2 scripts. That also means that there’s likely to be a shorter break between the Season 1 finale and the Season 2 premiere.
Set in Middle-earth, the Lord Of The Rings series will take place during the Second Age, more than 3,000 years before the start of Tolkien’s The Fellowship Of The Ring, and will explore new storylines and characters.
