In a spot of surprising but entirely welcome news, Star Trek 4 is in talks with Noah Hawley to write and direct, reports TheWrap.
Hawley gained recognition when he created and wrote Fargo, an FX black comedy-crime drama anthology series that has been going since 2014. Following the success of Fargo, Hawley went on to create Legion, a psychedelic sci-fi series based on the Marvel Comics character David Haller/Legion. The show’s third and final season aired this summer.
Hawley’s other writing credits include Bones, The Unusuals and My Generation. He also wrote 2006 film The Alibi and made his feature film directorial debut this year with Lucy In The Sky, which he wrote and produced as well.
The new Star Trek film will be the fourth in the series that launched in 2009, and includes Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). The series stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu and Karl Urban as Bones.
Hawley is set to produce the new Star Trek film via his 26 Keys production banner alongside JJ Abrams, who is producing through his company Bad Robot. According to TheWrap, there are currently three potential scripts floating about for the sequel, which is not uncommon for Star Trek.
