The latest actor to join the cast of The Matrix 4 is Toby Onwumere, according to Deadline. The film is being directed by franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski, from a script written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
This won’t be the first time Onwumere has worked with Wachowski: the actor joined the cast of the auteur’s globetrotting Netflix sci-fi Sense8 for the show’s second season. He played Capheus Onyango, a matatu driver from Nairobi, Kenya.
Onwumere is also known for his work in Season 5 of Empire, in which he played Kai, a war correspondent and the love interest of series regular Jamal Lyon.
He joins a new cast made up of Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, A Series Of Unfortunate Events), Jessica Henwick (Marvel’s Iron Fist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Mirror, The Get Down) and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Frozen).
The new cast members join Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their Matrix trilogy roles as Neo and Trinity respectively, as well as Jada Pinkett Smith, who played Niobe.
The Matrix 4 will be the first in the series that Wachowski hasn’t worked on with her sister Lily. Lana Wachowski is also producing with her long-time collaborator Grant Hill, and filming is expected to begin at the start of 2020.
The Matrix 4 will hit cinemas in 2022. Get all the latest sci-fi news with every issue of SciFiNow.
