Infinity Son: Interview with author Adam Silvera

We speak to Adam Silvera, the New York Times bestselling author of They Both Die At The End, History Is All You Left Me and What If It’s Us about his latest novel and his first foray into fantasy, Infinity Son.

Can you tell us more about your new novel, Infinity Son?

Infinity Son is about two brothers who find themselves locked into a war when one brother discovers he has impossible powers and the other brother remains powerless. There’s also a daughter who is grieving the mysterious death of her heroic parents, and there’s a shapeshifter who feels trapped in New York’s most dangerous gang.

What is your creative process when writing your novels and where do you get your inspiration from?

I plot pretty extensively to begin with, but that’s especially true for this series because I want to make sure I’m setting myself up for success with the sequels. As for inspiration, the book is a combination of my belief in reincarnation and my love for phoenixes and what life looks like when you discover that your past lives have been villainous and heroic.

This is your first fantasy novel, what made you decide to go in this direction and did you find many differences when writing for this genre?

I tell everyone that writing fantasy for me isn’t a departure but more of a homecoming. I have written magical stories since I was eleven and even though I tried writing this book years and years ago, it never clicked. I’m grateful I had the time to grow as a writer before beginning this series.

Have you always been a fan of the fantasy genre, and if so, what books or authors are your major influences?

I grew up on Harry Potter and Charmed and Supernatural and X-Men and those stories really shaped my fantasy sensibilities.

Can you tell us anything about the They Both Die At The End and What If It’s Us TV and film adaptations?

I cannot! 🙂

Are you working on anything else at the moment?

I’m working on the second Infinity Cycle book, another sequel to a different book of mine, and my next solo contemporary! Busy!

Infinity Son is out now from Simon & Schuster.
