Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has made no secret of his desire to make a Metal Gear Solid movie, and his planned adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s iconic videogame has taken another step towards becoming a reality.
Variety reports that Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly has been brought on to pen the script. Connolly also worked on the script for the director’s monster hit, along with Max Borenstein and Dan Gilroy, he’s got Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on the way, and his credits also include the brilliant Safety Not Guaranteed and the baffling Monster Trucks.
It’s still very early days for the project, which comes from producer Avi Arad, so there’s no news about casting or release dates as of yet. We are still waiting for the first great videogame movie after a string of disappointments (hey, apparently the new Assassin’s Creed game is great), but Vogt-Roberts’ obvious love of the game is definitely an encouraging sign. The first game was released in 1998 and it “follows Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralise the terrorist threat from Foxhound, a renegade special forces unit.” Which, as anyone who plays the game will tell you, is very much the elevator pitch. A movie could be a lot of fun.
