Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake might have just found its director. Nothing is set in stone yet, but Deadline reports that the studio wants Rob Marshall to help Ariel find her legs.
According to the site, Marshall is Disney’s top choice to direct and has already been offered the job. All that Marshall has to do now is accept.
If the director decides to be part of that world, he’ll have two Disney movies on the go: Marshall is currently working on the upcoming Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns (starring Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep), and it sounds as though he’s doing a pretty good job with it if Disney is so keen to keep working with him.
The Little Mermaid remake, which is part of Disney’s collection of live-action retellings, doesn’t currently have any cast members attached to it, but it will feature some new songs composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken.
Menken was one of the original film’s songwriters along with Howard Ashman, but Ashman sadly died in 1991. The pair also worked on Aladdin, Beauty And The Beast and the musical version of Little Shop Of Horrors.
