Sony’s mysterious re-imagining of The Grudge has finally been given a release date: the film is set to hit cinemas on 16 August 2019.
The reboot is coming from Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures. Nicolas Pesce, the writer and director of the chilling indie horror The Eyes Of My Mother, has signed on to direct and rewrite the script, which had been written by Midnight Meat Train‘s Jeff Buhler. Confirmed cast members include John Cho (Star Trek, The Exorcist) and Andrea Riseborough (The Death Of Stalin, Black Mirror).
The original 2002 Japanese film, known as Ju-on: The Grudge, was directed by Takashi Shimizu. It ended up spawning a US remake starring Sarah Michelle Geller in 2004, followed by two sequels in 2006 and 2009.
